Day 10/11 – Lewein to Lösnich to Ellenz-Poltersdorf

What a lovely room with a balcony overlooking the vineyards at the Weingut Der Weis, turkey and salad bar for dinner, full buffet breakfast (and picnic lunch). The weather prediction is for light rain again today….so we are ready for it!
I am completely out of superlatives to describe the scenery here along the Moselle River. Today we pass more beautiful churches and a castle in ruins and half timber framed houses, all very old, at Bernkastel-Kues, which is completely over run with tourists!

Miles and miles of grapevines! Up the steep slopes in every direction as far as the eye can see. Some vineyards perched between large outcroppings of rocks and growing out of very rocky ground! It is a such interesting time of year to be travelling through the vineyards as the harvest is full on. We can see and smell piles of grape seeds and skins by the side of the trail, waiting to be spread on the ground under the vines. The heady scent of the wine-must hanging in the air!
There are also many orchards along the way…we have had apples, pears, plums, apple-pears and seen lots of people picking up the walnuts from the numerous walnut trees.

We are really on the tourist trail now…there are so many River cruise boats! And so many Gastehauses, wine bars, biergartens, restaurants along the trail! When we decide to stop riding at about 4:30 we find a gastehaus and check in for the night. We somehow manage to communicate despite my very rudimentary German! A pen and paper and sign language help big time! The restaurant (Hotel Heil) in town is also ‘German-speaking only’ so sometimes you’re not exactly sure what you are ordering and what you might get? It ends up being quite delicious! And we have an after dinner stroll back through town and along the river to our gastehaus.

Although there is Wifi here at the house, Edith doesn’t seem to know the password so I have had to devise a way to write up my post in my notebook and when we get our next connection I can copy it over.
