Day 14 – Koblenz to Bacharach on the RheinRadweg

Here we are riding along the Romantic Rhein….on a glorious sunshine-y day.  For the first 20 kms (approx.) the trail is quite lovely….lots of trees, birds singing and the river with its cruise boats and barges on our left.  Apparently this is the side to ride on and we can see that there are a few industrial sights on the other side.  Eventually, however, as the valley narrows, ( see the Lorelie Rock) we are squeezed between the river and the highway ( with the railway alongside that).  It is very busy with caravans and campers, motorcycles and cars and the odd tour bus.  We still have a nice wide path, but it is noisy so we turn up the music and carry on.  We stop and walk through some of the towns along the way and take pictures. It is perfect riding weather.

We have been noticing the fall colours coming on brighter each day…actually more maple trees here than I expected.

Our goal is the town of Bacharach where the castle (Berg Stahleck) has been turned into a youth hostel and we saw pictures of it on one of Rick Steeves travel shows.  It certainly is a picturesque town…nestled in a narrow valley with the vineyards on the slopes around it.

We cycled 55 kms today and when the sun disappears behind the hills it gets quite chilly so we find an interesting cafe in town to warm up with a Koffee…

I doubt this wood stove which was in full operation would pass any inspection in Canada!
