From plateau to mountains and valleys.

Today we start a new mode of transport…picked up a rental car, said goodbye to the busy streets of the city and headed for the Mountains.   It didn’t take long to find a gorgeous picnic spot amid brightly colored leaves in the sunshine  on the slope of a mountain looking down into the Jerte Valley.

It was a long way down into the Jerte Valley from the Salamanca plateau!  We could see some very dark clouds approaching and then it was raining!  We found our accomodation which was to be an apartment on the side of the mountain in a recreational area with lots of hiking trails nearby.  We knocked on the door and rang the bell and honked the horn but there was no response?  We waited and waited….wandered around the property and not a soul to be seen?  We were quite frustrated because we had reserved the room with our credit card, but after 2 hours (it was now almost 6 pm)we gave up and went in search of another hotel.

We luckily found one a few miles down the highway where there was a delightfully friendly receptionist who spoke English!  We were given a room with a view of the terraced cherry orchards and the mountains above!

The next day the sun broke through the clouds and we had a glorious walk up up up the mountain to see “Los Pilones”.  (The pic on the far right)

We did another walk along the river later that day…and discovered a trout farm.

We wished we could stay for more hiking in the mountains but it was time to move on….
